San Francisco’s Downtown Museums

San Francisco has a lot to offer residents and tourists alike, and museums are among the many attractions to see during your visit. Some of the city’s best museums are walking distance from The Pickwick Hotel!

SFMOMA
SF MOMAThe San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is located near Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, just a few blocks away from The Pickwick. Both the permanent collections and visiting exhibits are thought provoking and memorable. Current and upcoming exhibitions include Mark Bradford, multi-media abstract painter and Naoya Hatakeyama, photographer.

Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month.

Contemporary Jewish Museum
Also bordering Yerba Buena Gardens and near The Pickwick, the Contemporary Jewish Museum offers multi-disciplinary exhibits year-round. Current exhibits include California Dreaming: Jewish Life in the Bay Area from the Gold Rush to the Present, Black Sabbath: The Secret Musical History of Black-Jewish Relations, and Do Not Destroy: Trees, Art, and Jewish Thought. The museum also offers film screenings and lectures.

Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month.

The Cartoon Art Museum
A comic and cartoon-lovers dream for kids of all ages! The Cartoon Art Museum is located Cartoon Art Museumon Mission Street near New Montgomery Street in downtown San Francisco and is home to over 6,000 original cartoon and animation art pieces. If that isn’t enticing enough, the museum is running a special Avengers exhibition until late October!

The California Historical Society
California Historical SocietyIf you’re looking to learn more about California history during your visit to San Francisco, the California Historical Society is a great place to start whether you stay for a brief visit or spend an afternoon in the Historical Society’s extensive research library. The museum is running a special exhibit on the history of the Golden Gate Bridge, which celebrates its 75th birthday in 2012.
