4. How much of my Whale Tail plate purchase fee goes to help the California coast?
For every Whale Tail plate you buy for yourself, a family member, or a friend, the DMV in the first year distributes a portion and thereafter all of the funds to the California Coastal Commission, the California Coastal Conservancy, and to the state Environmental License Plate Fund for environmental projects. For example, if you order the standard Whale Tail plate, the DMV distributes $15 to the Coastal Commission and Conservancy, plus another $15 to the environmental fund. With each year’s renewal, the DMV distributes the entire amount of your renewal fee for our coastal conservation and education work.
