Around Town: Visiting San Francisco’s Ferry Building

One of San Francisco’s top destinations for locals and visitors alike is the city’s historic Ferry Building. Opened in 1892, the Ferry Building was a bustling transit hub; since the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges were yet to be built, nearly all visitors arrived to San Francisco by boat. Fast forward to today and the Ferry Building is bustling yet again, this time with commuters and culinary connoisseurs alike.

San Francisco Ferry BuildingWhat to Expect
An indoor gourmet marketplace spanning the length of the building is open daily and features an array of tempting food from gourmet burgers from Gott’s Roadside, to a waterfront oyster bar at Hog Island Oyster Company, to gourmet chocolate from Recchiuti and Scharffen Berger. There truly is something for everyone here!

Peak hours at the Ferry Building are on weekends, especially Farmers’ Market Saturdays. Weekdays are typically far less crowded, so if slowly wandering from shop to shop and sampling as you go is your speed, try to visit the Ferry Building during the week.

San Francisco is flush with Farmers’ Markets in several neighborhoods, but the Ferry Building is the only location in the city to host a market three days per week. The Ferry Building Farmers’ Market is available Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Walking Tours
Free walking tours of the Ferry Building are offered by San Francisco City Guides at noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Getting There
The Ferry Building doubles as a landmark, as its tall clock tower at the intersection of Market Street and Embarcadero can’t be missed. Take any Muni Metro line to Embarcadero Station or hop on the historic street-level F line. And if you’re staying with us at The Pickwick, just take a short walk straight down Market Street!
